With the vast array of barcode scanners on the market the questions arises, which on is the best choice for me? This depends on the capabilities that you need and the environment you plan on using it in.
Capabilities:
In the past there were only so many types of barcodes that you would need your scanner to read such as UPC, Code 128, and Code 39. In the present day, with the introduction of 2D barcodes such as QR codes, Data Matrix, etc., there are many more symbologies (languages) that you may need to have the capabilities to read. Therefore, the first step towards finding the perfect barcode scanner is to decide which types of codes will be utilized in your business. While it may go against conventional wisdom to purchase a scanner that has more bells and whistles than you need, the new 2D barcode readers may be the best solution. In addition to reading 2D codes, many of these devices will also read the traditional linear barcodes.
Other capabilities to keep in mind revolve around the data you recover from the scanned barcodes. Options to consider are whether you would like your data to transferred real time to a terminal via a cord or wireless connection, or if you would prefer to have you information stored on the scanner itself for future downloading to a computer.
Environment:
The environment in which you plan on using your scanner should have a significant impact on the type of bar code scanner you choose. This refers to whether you plan on connecting your device wirelessly or through other corded options such as USB, PS2, or RS232. If your needs require the scanning to take place at a terminal with no needs to move about a facility a corded connection may work for you. If your business could benefit from the ability to scan at different locations throughout your facility, as well as have real-time data transfer, a wireless option may best suit your needs.
With all the options available, it is important that you choose wisely when purchasing a barcode scanner as it can transform the way your business runs. As in most aspects of commerce, in order to achieve maximum efficiency, you must be using the right tools.
